Carson Wilson, of Groton, was in a Toyota 4Runner that veered off the wrong side of Fishtown Road around 1:20 a.m. and collided with a tree near the intersection of Little Gull Lane, authorities said.
His older brother Skyler Wilson along with Kais Shiman, of Mystic, and Alex Quilter, of Groton, were also in the SUV. It's unclear who was driving.
The teens were in critical condition when paramedics rushed them to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where Carson later died.
Groton Police Chief L. J. Fusaro promised a "thorough, impartial, and exhaustive investigation" to learn the circumstances surrounding the crash.

An update on that campaign said Carson's organs were donated so "his legacy will live on in others." It also noted that Skyler had surgery and several more are scheduled.
A vigil for four teens will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Noank Volunteer Fire Department at 31 Main St. in Groton, according to social media posts. There was one held on Monday, as well.
The tree that the SUV hit has become a makeshift memorial with people leaving flowers, notes, and lacrosse gear.
Carson played for the Stonington Bears Youth Lacrosse and his brother played for the Fitch High School lacrosse team.
